Velocity Motorsports
joined up with L'Equipe Syrinx Racing to field a car in the Second
Annual MIRacing/SIRL FastLap 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway
on April 19, 1998. More than 55 drivers competed for a spot in
the 33-car field, and the competition was fierce. The following
is a brief recap of the month's events:
MARCH
16: Two hours of
testing at IMS. Turned a best lap of 235.767 mph, almost 3 mph
faster than my previous best.
MARCH
25: Two more hours
of testing at IMS. Turned a new best lap, 236.025 mph.
MARCH
30: Passed rookie
orientation program
APRIL
3: Turned a new best
lap in practice, 236.049 mph.
APRIL
4: First day of qualifying.
Turned in a lap of 234.263 mph, which put me 6th on the provisional
grid. By the end of the day I found myself a respectable 11th,
middle of row 4.
APRIL
19: The race. Ran
in the top three throughout and led for a while, but tangled
with a backmarker on lap 62 and dropped out, finishing 22nd.
I had a car capable of a podium, if not the win; it's too bad
it had to end that way. In any case, congrats to Mike Bedard,
who came through for L'Equipe Syrinx and took the victory.
APRIL
27: Rescore of results
gives Rik Anthrax the victory, moves me up to 21st.
Lista
sponsored my Velocity/LSR Dallara Olds for the SIRL 500 at IMS.
